A good intro to Zahn
An excellant collection of early short fiction by Zahn I particualrly liked 'Shadows of evening" and the sequel 'Not only to the stong". Some stories are clearly showing a writer still learnign hsi craft, but are still veryu good, and the title story is top-notch.

A must-read for anyone who's done any climbing in the Cascades. This book contains lively interviews in Q&A format with dozens of inspiring mountaineers of the 20th century. The profiles include Jim Whitttaker, John Roskelley, Piro Kramar, Jim Wickwire, Ira Spring, along with early members of the Seattle Mountaineers Club, such as Norval Grigg and Harold Engles, just to name a few. Rich with adventurous anecdotes, historic perspective and poignant reflections on climbing.

Packed with trails all over Oregon
This is a great guidebook, I'm glad I was able to find a copy. It's thick, with 370+ pages of trail descriptions, a hundred maps, and lots of photos. Not being from Oregon, I was glad to have such a complete and detailed guide to the X-C ski opportunities near Salem when I had an extra weekend there.

Every backcountry skier's library must have a copy
This is the first printed guide I turn to for information about ski destinations close to home. For years, these authors had a corner on the kick-and-glide market. They set the trail for others to follow, with the familiar format of two pages, a B&W photo and a sketch map per entry. With several new, specialty books on the market for snowshoeing and snowboarding, skiers still prefer Kirkendall and Spring, because the authors share the aesthetic that draws us to Nordic skiing: a simple sport, with dignity, and as much respect for its heritage as for the environment in which we practice it.

Fountains and Cascades (For Your Garden)

Great idea book with Beautiful photos of fountains
This is a wonderful book featuring a wide variety of beautiful fountains for all types of gardens. The book is in full-color and most photos are full-page size. You'll find many unique ideas here to fit any size garden.

The book starts out with photos of formal fountains and springs. Then images focus on integrating the fountain into the garden or adding plants around it for accent. Captions below describe the fountain & point out its special features.

My favorite fountains include a woman holding a small bowl that falls onto a circle of rocks. I also liked a colorful Spanish influenced fountain with four frogs shooting water to the center.

This book is not meant to teach how to make or install a fountain. Rather it is an idea book. I found the examples here inspirational & they were very helpful in choosing a fountain for my garden.

Mountaineering in the North Cascades for families!
This book was a revelation to me. Normally, books about climbing in the North Cascades are hairy-chested stories about rotten belays, avalanches, and other brushes with death. This is a collection of essays (and wonderful photographs!) about climbing with a family. Once chapter in particular is the story of Harvey Manning taking his daughters, aged about ten and twelve, to the summit of Glacier Peak, over a week-long outing. As a fairly agressive climber (and father) myself, the book has really changed my view of what I can do with my son.

Of Men and Mountains

The childhood of Justice "Freedom of Speech"
Living in Brazil, I can't remember exactly how I happened to find this book. The important aspect is that I found it, I read it and even some years later I still carry some passages in my mind, so I have to regard this book as a good one.

It is a kind of autobiographical narrative of the youth of Mr. William O. Douglas, who later in life became a Supreme Court Judge in America.

An interesting aspect, is that later I learned that as a Judge, Mr. Douglas would very often give shelter to the 5th. Amendment in his sentences, and by reading the book, we can sort of understand how his personality and his passion for freedom was formed many years before.

It is a first person narrative of his early years as a child and later as young man, and we can clearly understand his respect for wildlife and independence in a human's being life.

Recalling his early expeditions as a boy in nearby mountains, Mr. Douglas describes us the forests, rivers and rainbow-trouts of his youth. At a certain time I started to think there was too much information about trout-fishing, but we should always forgive and understand a man when he decides to tell us about his childhood. :)

This book is not about the Supreme Court Judge, but on the contrary, it is about the poor boy who grew under the mountains and borrowed some of their magnificent dignity from them.

I hope to read some of Mr. Douglas' Law writings one day, so I can finally understand the whole man and close this chapter. But this will still take some years, and until then, all I can say is that I have nice memories from this book. By the way, a pretty hard to find book.
